Daily Dose of Suck

I was updating my profile on Blogger some time back. In the photo section, I pointed to this image. After submission, I get the following error:

This is a genuine question, and not a belittling rant: is there a reason for this? I mean, shouldn’t they be checking for the MIME type or something?

Maybe they are not willing to use ONE HTTP request to determine the MIME type. Waste of bandwidth?

I thought so, but considering that only logged-in users can upload photos, which means less abuse, I don’t see the problem with an HTTP request to do determine the MIME type. Moreover, reading the MIME type itself would require reading only a few bytes.

That's exactly the same thing I tried to do a while back. And that's precisely what I fussed about!

Can you not work around that by appending ?.jpg to the URL?

It understands URL parameters. So, doesn’t work.

Since MSIE determines what to do to a file sometimes using the content type and sometimes using the extension, and since it's hard to know when it uses both, any server serving something has to make sure that both the extension and the content-type are correct. In their case, it's to prevent XSS

Funny...I feel better now about this whole thing...Microsoft is like a hate-sink. You can hate them without having it affect your blood-pressure.
