Preparation

So the past week I’ve been gymming—running the treadmill, cycling, and doing some general exercises. Cut down on smoking (sucks a lot of energy). Had beer only once (dehydrates)—two pints—in the week. Just before The Day, I thought of having some pasta (carbs), but couldn’t find any of those pasta-in-minutes stuff; so ended up having rice (which is good enough) and some orange juice. Next day morning had an apple and 400 ml of orange juice.

The Day

The celebration run began at 9:20 or so. Compared to the full- and half-marathons, not surprisingly, there were lots of folks. Aztec, HSBC, McAfee had good representation; not many folks from Yahoo!. Three of us—Akshay, Girish and myself—began together.

The route was a circuit, staring from Kanteerava Stadium, going through Vidhana Soudha, Cubbon Park, etc. Fantastic. The first three-and-a-half kilometers was relatively simple. Gradually, things became tougher: it was warmer; I was gasping for breath; and my legs were beginning to tire. I ran for another kilometer or so; then decided to walk a bit—a little less than a kilometer, I reckon. Girish was kinda ahead of us at this point, so we had to catch up. Less than two kilometers to go, and we could see the stadium. It seemed like we had a long way to go, but it wasn’t. We ran. We finished. 45 minutes.

We met a couple other colleagues at the stadium. We were terribly thirsty by now, but couldn’t find water anywhere. We could see Lipton iced tea being served; we decided to get some, but the darned thing was warm! The funny thing was that we had to actually pay for that stuff (Lipton was a sponsor).

Later, we waited in queue for certificates, only to later realise that we were standing there for no reason: there was no one distributing them! Oh well. We decided to get back to office. No ricks were willing to go toward MG road, so we began walking. On Akshay’s insistence we decided to walk a bit, have some fresh juice, and then head back. No juice. Casa Piccola was close-by, mercifully, so we stopped and had iced teas. And fags.

Later

Played some table tennis at office, changed to non-stinky clothes, and then headed to Pecos. Darned place was terribly crowded. So we headed to Koshy’s. Had bacon and eggs, and diet beer. Heh, I never knew Kingfisher had diet beer—“30% less calories without compromising on taste and strength.”

Seven kilometers isn’t a big deal, really. Well, it was exhausting, but it wasn’t like many of my colleagues made it out to be. Feels good.

yep, the marathon was easier than I thought too.
'n rather surprised didn't see many people from yahoo despite yahoo being one of the sponsors.
The spirit of marathon-running still has to grip Bangaloreans.
Finished it in 36 mins 42 secs. 'n jogged all the way.
What totally amazed me was the spirit in some people.
The spastic kids.
The 55-year old woman who completed the full marathon.(She got a standing ovation.)
The guy in the wheelchair whose only complaint was about the sores on his fingers.
The kids from some charitable home who were flailing their arms and running, squealing with joy.
The 74 year old woman ( I asked her age) who jogged the celebration run.
The man who ran the celebration run barefoot when the tarred roads were becoming warmer by the minute.
Many more...
By the way, saw you too! I must say liked the yahoo vests though.
