God, are you listening? Umm, sure you are.

Dear God,

I love Ruby, as you know. I love Rails, but I want an insanely awesome reference. You surely know that Agile Web Development with Rails has kinda released? Now I don’t know if it’s insanely awesome or not, but all Rubyists are insanely awesome, as you must surely know, so I’ll take a chance.

But, God, you know that $48 is kinda too much, don’t you? God, can you magically send me a copy? Or perhaps ask a Good Angel to send it to me?

Also, God, I’ll save you the trouble of listening to another prayer: you might want to send Gavri a copy too. He’s a nice guy, you see, and loves Ruby.

Thank you,
An Ardent Devotee

Dear child,

Just a gentle reminder: "Thou shalt not steal." If thou dost not value it at $48, then thou dost not need it.

Love, God.

Who said anything about valuation?

Me is Gavri.
God and I made a deal a long time ago. I don't disturb her by praying. And she doesn't try to stop me from stealing. I'm getting that Rails book, no matter what.

And I’m gonna steal that book from you, if you let me.

I don't do deals! You must have gotten me confused with that other guy.

Thou shalt buy the Rails book so more will be created! The writers of
the Rails book deserve to get paid for their labors. Alas, if sales of
the Rails book are low (due to thievery) then the authors will be
discouraged and no more Rails books will be forthcoming. That will be the curse for theft!

God

But God, surely you are intelligent enough to know that my loss from stealing the book (the decrease I cause in the future availability of Rails books) is negligible compared to my gain (Owning this Rails Book).

Ah well, I always suspected that other guy was smarter.

It's not your loss I'm worried about. The world does not
revolve around you.

Ah well, I always suspected that other guy was smarter.

Now you're skating on thin ice.
Be careful around thunderstorms.

adios,
God

Dear God of Capitalistic Morality,
I bought the Rails book just as you wanted me to (It's downloading as we speak).
Hope to meet you again when I face my next ethical dilemma.

Regards,
A Mortal

Why do you want to buy the deadtree version? You could save a lot if you buy the PDF. Is your company cool with letting you use the printer on a whole book?

We could even share the cost of the PDF. All we have to do is make on oath to Almighty God that we won't read the PDF at the same time :)

P.S: Feel free to delete this comment if you want to.

I guess I could print the book, but, as I said, I’d rather have it with all the jazz.

I prefer deadtree versions too. But in this case, I don't think I'll ever get a chance to use the deadtree if I order the PDF now. If I buy the PDF+Paper combo pack, before I get the paper-book in my hands in 3-4 months, I doubt if there would be a page I wouldn't have already read from the PDF.

P.S: I just realised that [info]appaji's user-pic is from the cover of Catch-22

I think the book's worth every penny ... even though it's a bit pricey.

I just don't get how come you're in IT and you don't have lousy $48 to afford it? ;(
