Surgeon General’s Warning

Warning on a pack of Marlboro Lights:

SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Smoking By Pregnant Women May Result in Fetal Injury, Premature Birth, And Low Birth Rate.

Warning on a pack of Camel Lights:

SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Cigarette Smoke Contains Carbon Monoxide.

There’s no direct warning that smoking is bad. Is this just a California thing?

The cigarette packs in Thailand are very interesting. When I had bought a pack from Bangkok, I so wanted to get rid of the pack that I ended up smoking more than I normally would.

The European ones are simpler and scarier. "Smoking kills" in large bold friendly letters :). Though not as graphic as the Thai ones.

The US has crappy smoking warnings. Go-go lobbying dollars!

That's a general US thing. Lobbying dollars, like drbrain said.

Information versus Assertions

The warnings provide concrete, specific information that any sane adult can use to make an informed choice. Simply asserting that "This is bad" is nowhere near as useful or compelling. Granted, some people believe that governemnts should treat citizens like stupid children who exist simply to offer up tribute, but many others prefer to encourage informed, free choice.

Fair enough, but remember that sane adults aren't the only smokers out there.

Even the warnings that Premshree came across are better than the older one - something along the lines of "The Surgeon General has been thinking that maybe smoking isn't so good for you."

Got a phone number? Free calls on weekends. :->

p.s: Cigarette lighters are really nifty here. I burn out two already.

The guy I went to Bangkok with actually ended up smoking less because he found the pictures on the packs offputting :) So I guess it does work.

Ive heard people hardly smoke in California. Is that true? A German once went there to do her internship in L.A and she was the only person smoking out there at her office along with a black security guard (and they didn't speak to one another because of the whole L.A racist thingy.)

The percentage of people who smoke in the US is generally much lower than in Europe or Asia and it is probably lower in CA than in many other areas of the US. Areas where people are generally into health and exercise have much lower smoking rates. In CA you find a lot of people into health and exercise. Maybe it's because the weather is generally very good for exercise. Oh, and CA is really into youth and looking young and smoking really messes with that - the Thai cig pack is right, smoking ages you fast.

Of course in LA why would you want to smoke, there's plenty of smoke in the air already.

Those Thai cig packs are great! Scare the hell out of those pesky smokers, I say.

Dude, take up some very aerobic sport like running up steep hills in the Bay Area, that'll cure 'ya of smoking.
