OSCON Wrapup
suburbia
[info]premshree

OSCON was a lot of fun. My talk went pretty well. I think. Here’s the presentation, if you’re interested.

A lot of the sessions and tutorials were nice—I mostly attended a bunch of Perl talks. Among the keynotes, the best, in my opinion, was Kathy Sierra’s.

Oh, this picture that I took won a runner-up prize at the Third Annual OSCON Photo Contest. So I got a HP Photosmart R717. Just like that.

Also, during the OSCON week, we released an update of our Search Web Services SDK. Here’s the announcement. It now includes the Lua and Ruby bindings that I had worked on earlier.

I’ll write more about the stuff that happened during that week if/when I get time.

Memoize
suburbia
[info]premshree

MJD was talking about Memoize. Here it is in Ruby:

module Memoize
  def memoize(func_name)
    cache = {}
    (class<<elf; self; end).send(:define_method, func_name) { |*args|
      return cache[args] if cache.has_key? args
      cache[args] = super
    }
  end
end

There’s a lot of code in the Perl Memoize module; maybe it does other things—I haven’t really looked. Oh, and here’s this Memoize module from RAA. I’m some months late. :-)

Here’s some pictures from Portland.

[...] Congratulations! You have been accepted as a presenter for the O'Reilly Open Source Convention 2006 at the Oregon Convention Center July 24, 2006 - July 28, 2006. [...]

Yeah, I’ll be speaking at OSCON 2006. Will be nice to meet some of the Ruby guys and the Pugs folks. I guess I’ll be in the Bay Area after the conference.

GNUnify 2006

GNUnify was fun. Gopal has written about it here, so I don’t need to write anything. Instead, I’ll leave you with an interesting picture. :-)

More pictures here. Pankaj’s pictures here.

In Pune tomorrow
suburbia
[info]premshree

A few of us Yahoos will be in Pune tomorrow to speak at GNUnify. Last time, with Warren adding bits about Rails, was fun.

Raj and I are talking on web services. We are going to have a web services contest too: build a cool application using one or more of the available Yahoo! APIs. Submissions will be judged at the end of the conference. What do you get? Yahoo! goodies, of course! Go, dig!

Hope to see some of you LJers, if you’re around! Now I’m off to watch that French movie everybody’s been talking about.

Shalom!

My visa for Israel just came through. I’ll be speaking at OSDC::Israel::2006. 26-28 February. Larry Wall will be there, and so will Audrey Tang (of Pugs fame). Should be fun. (All this assuming I’m not terribly bogged down with work.)

I’ll maybe speak to Larry about Perl and Ruby and all that stuff if I get a chance. ;-) You Ruby guys, anything you’d like me to ask Larry?

Need to apply for my Schengen visa now, as I intend to spend the weekend in Vienna.

FOSS.IN

Day two saw the Ruby track. My talk — where I tried to talk about things different in Ruby — was followed by Yogi’s, where he talked about the syntax and things like that. This was followed by a Ruby on Rails tutorial by Avik. The turn-out for the talks was very encouraging.

Evening was spent drinking with [info]jackol. Dublin followed by Purple Haze. (Haze played Cradle of Filth’s version of Hallowed Be Thy Name! Yay!)

Didn’t attend much of day three, except for the web services BoF. Later, Rasmus, Gopal, [info]bluesmoon, [info]teemus and I headed to Opus for dinner. Man, that place rocks. Totally.

Attended a couple of DB talks on day four, and mostly just hung around and met people and stuff. Of course, there was the rock show later which was pretty decent.

Swaroop has tons of pictures. Photos from all.

I’m a tired man. The Year End Party’s tomorrow, after which I’ll be a tireder [sic] man. I’m off to Bombay next weekend for some rest.

Ruby meet tomorrow
suburbia
[info]premshree

I was working late night so I woke up at 10:30 or so. Took a shower and then headed to the venue. Oh man it’s awesome to meet people — the best thing about the conference.

The Open Source at Google talk had one slide talking about the open source stuff they use. I didn’t know SSL was open source software! Haha.

All the Ruby talks are tomorrow. We’re gonna have an informal Ruby meet at Pecos or someplace in MG road after all the talks. As of now, Dibya Prakash, Yogi and I have confirmed. Please let me know if you’re coming!

Oh yeah, tag photos with fossin2005.

Tired

[info]premshree

I’ve been working in the nights on one project, and on another one in the mornings. And not consistently. My body feels very weird. I need a vacation, but I wonder if that’ll be possible anytime soon.

I’m almost done watching all the Coupling episodes. Anyway, I have Pink Floyd The Wall to look forward to, which my cousin gave me when I was in Kerala last week.

By the way, for those haven’t noticed, we pretty much have a Ruby track at FOSS.IN/2005! There’s also Firefox(-related) talks. Next week should be fun.

I’m off home now (Banglore home) for some rest.

PS: I need to start gymming or something. I used to be so thin long ago.

My talk, and other things in Sri Lanka
suburbia
[info]premshree

  • I didn’t know Sam’s talk would cover some Ruby. Anyway, I did more like a hands-on thingie, and since many things didn’t overlap, things were good. I tried to demonstrate things that are different and fun in Ruby.
  • Saying not-so-good things about PHP when Rasmus is in the audience — weird.
  • Had a long discussion with Steve about OpenSpice.
  • O’Reilly is coming to India.
  • Bristol and Gold Leaf are popular cigarettes in Sri Lanka.
  • Lion Beer is popular (and nice).
  • Marvan Atapatu and Sanath Jayasuriya are rock stars.
  • Bollywood stars are very popular here.
  • Quite a lot of folks listen to classic rock. (There are at least a couple classic rock radio stations.)
  • Stigmata and Paranoid Earthling are popular Sri Lankan rock bands.

I’m taking my girlfriend to Sri Lanka

Ruby, apparently. So yeah, I got confirmation. I will be speaking on Ruby at FOSSSL. My talk will most probably follow Sam Ruby’s. I’m flying Thursday night, and back Monday morning.

Should be fun.

Bombay Rains
suburbia
[info]premshree

Bombay’s all screwed due to the rains. My dad left office (Kanjurmarg) at 16:30 or so and reached home the next day at 05:00! As much as all this is messy, the rains are one of many things that make Bombay so much fun. Yeah, well, maybe too much is not fun, though. A friend just wrote in saying, “there are dead animals floating at some places, sewage water flowing into the roads, broken shanties and homeless people shivering in the cold.” That’s definitely not a good thing.

Flights to/from Bombay have been cancelled or delayed and stuff. Don’t know if I’ll be able to get to Bombay on Friday. For all you know, the conference might not even happen.

Update: Due to the rain situation in Bombay, the conference stands postponed until further notice.

Update: The conference will now take place on 27th and 28th of August.

Agile India 2005, Mumbai
suburbia
[info]premshree

So after a successful conference in Bangalore, Agile India comes to Mumbai. 29th and 30th July, 2005. It’ll be held at SPCE, Andheri. The initial list of proposals are here. I’ll be speaking on Ruby and agility.

I’m speaking on 29th—Saturday. The rest of the day promises to be good. Don’t know what I’m doing Sunday.
